TWENTY-FOUR

HE CANNOT KNOW

ALEX

Alex sat quietly in the far corner of the doctors’ lounge. With one foot planted firmly to the ground, the other pressed against the edge of the table, he balanced his weight on the back legs of his chair. He shifted slightly, rocking in cadence with the light murmuring snores of a fellow doctor who rested in a recliner on the other side of the room.

This was a peaceful space of refuge. A place to escape the rush and whirl that lived beyond these walls.

Growing up, he’d spent many a day in lounges similar to this. When he was five, the first floor lounge was little more than a couple of round tables, a sink, a vending machine, and an old green sofa. He could vividly remember the eight pack of crayons his father’s scrub nurse always kept tucked away for those late night calls. The green would always wear down to nubs before she’d bring him a new set. Apparently, he’d drawn a lot of dinosaurs.

Years later, it was a different city in a different hospital inside a different lounge where he’d spent his time cramming for midterms, flirting with the nurses, or playing mancala in the waiting room with Mr. Carillo while his wife received her infusions. He wasn’t naive, he’d always understood what this cold, sterile place meant to others, but somewhere within it, he’d been able to find repose and comfort.

Sitting here now, he knew that peace would likely not return. The wailing of the monitors still lingered, weighing heavy on his already burdened mind. He was only a few doors down when he saw the two nurses banging and prying at Kira’s door. He wasn’t entirely sure how long it actually took him to determine that the unanswered beeping from behind the nurses’ station were from Kira’s monitors, or how quickly he found himself pushing the nurses aside, pressing his own body into the door, certain it would open for him.

Two seconds. Maybe three.

Of course, it hadn’t felt like that, especially not after he met nothing but resistance. Kira’s door wouldn’t budge. And with every second that passed, he’d felt a piece of himself slip away. He had no way of knowing what was happening on the other side, and for the first time he suddenly understood why people hated hospitals. He understood the gnawing pain of not knowing, of being the one on the other side of the door.

It was why Kat had fought against Eric as he carried her out of the room that day. Being there wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but being there mattered. In the absence of presence, fear and doubt can grow into something colossal and unyielding.

Alex would have ripped the door from its hinges, but the energy on the opposite side had resisted any such force. After everything he’d planned . . . Everything he’d done, he’d feared it was all over.

But then the door clicked open.

It wasn’t what he’d feared. Kira was safe. And for
